Chicas loses in Calif. final

Chicas, a girls club soccer team from Hilo, gave it a good run at the Davis Legacy college showcase, reaching the championship game before losing 2-0 to the CDA Slammers on Tuesday.

Coached by Hilo coach Skee Saplan, the Chicas finished with a 3-2 record, powered by four goals by Vikings standout Miya Clarke.

Kyanah Blas, Glory Medeiros and Kiana Corpuz also scored goals and Alyeemomi Amaral and Hollie Saplan each registered two assists as Chicas battled the heat in Davis, California.

Saplan said the temperature reached 107 degrees Sunday when the team played two matches.

“Disappointing loss (in final), but (a) good showing,” Skee Saplan said. “Onto (the) next tourney.”

On Saturday, Chicas beat the CDA Slammers 2-1.

Vulcans’ Ishola on coaches’ honors list

UH-Hilo forward Brian Ishola was among the players recognized Tuesday on the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ Honors Court, which showcases men’s collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the 2016-17 season.

During his junior year, the 6-foot-6 North Dakota State transfer carried a 3.94 grade point average while majoring in kinesiology and exercise science. On the court, the Minnesota native averaged 15.5 points and 8.7 rebounds a contest.

Kamehameha seeks swimming assistant

Kamehameha is accepting applications for an assistant swimming coach.

The deadline to apply is July 27.

Hilo High air riflery practice starts Monday

The Hilo High air riflery team will begin practice on June 25 and official tryouts will begin July 31.

All interested participants (grades 9-12) must have a current physical examination.
