Four class of 2017 high school graduates recently were awarded $500 scholarships from the Kiwanis Club of East Hawaii during a luncheon in their honor.

• Hilo High’s Cody Pinzon and Brooke Sakuma received Kiwanis Club of East Hawaii Scholarships.

• Waiakea High’s Alyssa Hara and Kiaria Zoi Nakamura each were awarded Yasuo and Hanako Kuwaye Kiwanis Scholarships.

Scholarship recipients were all members of the Hilo High and Waiakea High Key Clubs. They submitted applications that included leadership roles in their respective clubs and community projects, letters of recommendation and academic achievements.

“As Key Club members, these hardworking and dedicated students have been a part of the Kiwanis family of East Hawaii for a number of years and logged in hundreds of hours of service,” said Cecily Nago, Kiwanis East Hawaii president.

“Through their exemplary service to their community and their clubs, they have served as mentors and positive role models that hold true to the Key Club International core values of leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness,” Nago added.
