Yanagi salvages 74 at Junior’s Cup
Hilo’s Pono Yanagi saved his second round at the Junior America’s Cup with three birdies on his final seven holes Tuesday, salvaging a 2-over 74 as Team Hawaii moved up two spots to 10th in DuPont, Washington.
Yanagi, a Kamehameha junior, birdied his first hole, the par-5 No. 10 but by the time he made the turn he had lost six strokes thanks to two double bogeys. On the front nine he shot 3-under and turned in the second-best score for Hawaii after Oahu’s Evan Kawai (72). Yanagi was tied for 15th overall.
With Oahu’s Remington Hirano and Davis Lee each turning in 75, Hawaii improved its first-round score by two shots with a 5-over 221 that left it 12-over. British Columbia led the 18-team field at 5-under.
The tournament wraps up Thursday.
Fishing deadline extended to Monday
The county Department of Parks and Recreation has extended registration to the 21st annual ‘Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament until Monday.
With seperate divisions for keiki ages 5-12, teens, men, women, kupuna 55 years and older, and ohana, the tournament run Aug. 18-20. There also will be a barbless circle hook challenge. Entry fee is $25 or $30 depending on division.
Registration forms, along with tournament rules, are available at County Parks and Recreation facilities islandwide, S. Tokunaga Store in Hilo, J. Hara Store in Kurtistown, and forms can be found online at http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/pr-recreation .
By Monday, completed registration forms must be turned in to the Recreation Division office at 799 Pi’ilani St. in Hilo or postmarked.
Weigh-ins will be conducted from noon-1:30 p.m. Aug. 20, 2017, at the Honokaa Sports Complex, 45-451 Akia St.

Special golf outing
Special Olympics East Hawaii Golf will be holding its 10th annual golf tournament Aug. 27 with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at Banyans Golf Club.
The format will be a four-man modified scramble, and each group will include a Special Olympics athlete.
Entry fee is $150 per golfer, Special Olympians play for free, which includes a round of golf, cart, lunch, and 19th-hole awards and prizes.
All proceeds go to Special Olympics East Hawaii Golf Program.
According to a release, 12 athletes are playing and are eager to compete. The field is limited to 48 players.

Neil Arakaki amassed the highest score July 16 as B.A.D. Company held a compact sporting clay shoot at the county trap and skeet range.
Following Arakaki (61) in the 100-target subgauge event were Dana Okazaki (58) and Dexter Egdamin (55).

• At a Big Island Trap Club shoot July 2 in which participants shot 50 targets, and the top guns were DeLance Wiegele (49, singles), Ronald Nakamura and DeLance Wiegele (45, handicap), Garrett Zane (43, doubles) and Earl Higa (46, sub-gauge).
The next registered shoot will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 6.
