Police are investigating a gunfire incident that occurred early Thursday morning in Puna.

At 12:24 a.m., police responded to reports of gunshots on Highway 11 in Kurtistown and learned a 59-year-old Hilo woman was driving toward Volcano when she passed a white sedan stopped on the shoulder near the Herbert C. Shipman Park in Keaau.

The woman told police the sedan pulled onto the road and came up quickly behind her vehicle. After the victim pulled off the highway near Olaa Road to allow the sedan to pass, she said she heard several gunshots coming from the sedan. One reportedly struck the victim’s vehicle. No one was injured.

The suspect’s vehicle, described only as a white four-door sedan, was last seen heading in toward Volcano direction on Highway 11.

Potential witnesses are asked to call the police nonemergency line at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
