The Hawaii Fire Department reported a possible drowning Saturday in Hilo.

The Hawaii Fire Department reported a possible drowning Saturday in Hilo.

At 3:49 p.m. Saturday, Fire Department personnel responded to a report that an unresponsive person had been pulled from the water just offshore Lili‘uokalani Park and Coconut Island. When responders arrived on the scene, they found a person performing CPR on the victim on offshore rocks. Fire Department medics then brought the person to the shore, continuing with CPR.

The witness said they initially had thought the person was snorkeling until they failed to see movement. They then alerted authorities and waded into the water to pull the victim out.

The victim, listed in critical condition, was transported to Hilo Medical Center and was later pronounced dead.
