During the week of July 24-30, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident and one was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 14; Puna, South Hilo and South Kohala, three each.
So far this year, there have been 672 DUI arrests compared with 620 during the same period last year, an increase of 8.4 percent.
There have been 773 major accidents so far this year compared with 830 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.9 percent.
To date, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities compared with 13 fatalities at the same point last year. This represents an increase of 61.5 percent for official fatalities.
There also are four vehicle-related deaths police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the other two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
