A second suspect faces attempted murder charges in a shooting incident Sunday evening at Isaac Hale Beach Park in lower Puna.
Police have charged 36-year-old Tyson K. Lewi of Pahoa with with first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony and two counts of first-degree criminal property damage.
He remains in police custody in lieu of $550,000 bail and will make his initial court appearance Thursday in Hilo District Court, unless he’s able to post bail prior to his scheduled court appearance.
Police believe Lewi shot two Mountain View men, ages 25 and 27, in an affray near the Pohoiki boat ramp in the park.
Both men remain in stable condition.
The first-degree attempted murder charge is because there were multiple victims and a conviction on that charge carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without parole. A conviction for second-degree attempted murder carries a mandatory sentence of life with the possibility of parole.
A search of court records turned up no prior criminal convictions for Lewi.
Another man, 49-year-old Rodney Wilbur Sr. of Mountain View, is the suspect in the shooting of a 35-year-old Pahoa man in the same incident. The victim in that shooting remains in critical condition at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
Wilbur was charged Tuesday with attempted second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony, prohibited possession of a firearm and illegally carrying a pistol.
Wilbur is legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm because of two misdemeanor domestic violence convictions.
He is free after posting $275,000 bail. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 7 in Hilo District Court, according to a police log.
