HONOLULU (AP) — A Honolulu street performer received a donated wheelchair to replace a stolen one.
Raymond Tavita says his wheelchair was stolen July 25 from the laundry area of his home. The 23-year-old was born with a birth defect that makes it hard for him to get around without the wheelchair.
Tavita makes money as a street performer doing magic and card tricks, but says without his wheelchair, he would be mainly confined to his home.
State Rep. John Mizuno hosted a news conference Monday asking the public for help. According to a news release, three donors then stepped in to provide the new wheelchair.
Tavita received the wheelchair during a surprise presentation Wednesday at the state Capitol.
PUC OKs state’s largest solar farm with batteries
HONOLULU (AP) — The state Public Utilities Commission approved a contract to build the largest solar farm connected to a battery system in the state.
State regulators on Friday approved the contract between Kauai Island Utility Cooperative and AES Distributed Energy Inc. to build the 28-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant with a 20-megawatt, five-hour energy storage system.
Kauai utility co-op president and CEO David Bissell says the facility will boost the co-op’s renewable sourced generation to make up more than 50 percent of its energy portfolio.
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative says in its application that it will save members more than $97 million throughout the life of the project.
