Police have charged a 30-year-old Honomu man with several offenses in connection with a pursuit July 24 in Pepeekeo.

Jordan Kaneshiro is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, illegally carrying a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm on the highway, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, drug paraphernalia and resisting order to stop.

Police say Kaneshiro, who was wanted on an arrest warrant, was the driver of a Ford sedan officers pursued on Highway 19 from Pepeekeo towards Hilo at about 2:45 p.m. July 24.

About 15 minutes later, the vehicle was found abandoned in Papaikou area and taken back to the Hilo station while task force officers investigated. A search warrant served on Kaneshiro’s vehicle lead to the recovery of a loaded handgun and black-tar heroin.

Kaneshiro was arrested without incident Aug. 2 at an Ainaloa residence.

On Friday, Hilo District Judge Peter Bresciani ordered Kaneshiro to appear for a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Monday.

Bresciani denied a defense request to reduce Kaneshiro’s $71,000 bail, saying he finds the allegations of illegal firearms and drugs “to be a particularly bad combination.”
