During the week of Aug. 7-13, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and two were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, four; Puna and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 706 DUI arrests compared with 657 during the same period last year, an increase of 7.5 percent.
There have been 813 major accidents so far this year compared with 883 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9 percent.
To date, there have been 22 official fatalities compared to 15 for the same time last year, an increase of 46.7 percent. There also have been four fatalities police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
