Search for missing helicopter crew suspended
HONOLULU (AP) — Officials suspended the search for five Army soldiers who were in a helicopter crash during offshore training last week.
A Coast Guard official said Monday that searchers mounted the best search they could.
Two Black Hawk helicopter crews were conducting training off the western tip of Oahu when one aircrew lost contact with the crew whose helicopter went missing.
Rescuers searched about 68,000 nautical miles but saw no signs of life or of the crew that went missing Aug. 15.
Searchers found what appeared to be pieces of helicopter fuselage and a helmet.
The debris field dispersed with strong currents to remote, deep areas of the ocean.
American Girl’s 1st Native Hawaiian doll on sale now
HONOLULU (AP) — American Girl made its first Native Hawaiian doll.
The doll’s name is Nanea Mitchell and it went on sale Monday. The doll is 18 inches tall and is priced at $115.
Her character grows up during World War II. Her wardrobe includes 1940s-era outfits, hula attire and many accessories.
A five-member advisory board helped ensure historical accuracy and cultural authenticity when creating the doll, the company said.
To celebrate the doll’s launch, American Girl is collecting donations for the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces program through the end of the year, matching every dollar made at its website and stores up to $75,000.
Scientists spot possible whale-dolphin hybrid
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — A research team is investigating a possible hybrid whale sighting off the Kauai coast.
The Cascadia Research group spotted what appeared to be a cross between a melon-headed whale and a rough-toothed dolphin during an 11-day field project in early August. The group was there to track the movements of target species such as melon-headed whales, rough-toothed dolphins, spotted dolphins, false killer whales and short-finned pilot whales.
Melon-headed whale sightings are rare near Kauai because the population that passes through spends its time around the entire archipelago, according to field project leader Robin Baird.
The team was able to get a biopsy from the possible hybrid, which had a blotchy skin pattern similar to a rough-toothed dolphin and a gently sloping head shape like to that of a melon-headed whale, Baird said.
With the biopsy, the team will be able to determine to what species the unusual whale, which was nicknamed Oreo by the crew, belongs.
Father does not directly implicate son in arson trial
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — The father of a man accused of setting a fire at a Maui gas station says the man told him to leave seconds before flames erupted at the pump.
Testifying during the trial of Brandon Oania, Joseph Oania said Thursday he had almost driven out of the parking lot at Kahului’s Tesoro Gas Express after 11 p.m. Jan. 24, 2016, when he looked in his rear-view mirror and saw fire.
Brandon Oania pleaded not guilty to arson in the fire that caused more than $30,000 in damage.
Joseph Oania also was charged with arson. He has a plea deal that calls for the charge to be dismissed if he testifies truthfully in his son’s case.
The trial resumed Monday.
