North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea will host Western Legislative Impacts on Traditional Medical Practice, a Native Hawaiian medicine seminar for health care providers and the general public, from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday (Aug. 28) in the Mauna Kea-Mauna Loa Room.
The free seminar will be presented by Helen Wong Smith, executive director of the Kauai Historical Society.
“Hawaii’s indigenous culture and ethnic diversity have contributed to unique laws that accommodate culturally based medical practices,” Smith said.
The presentation will discuss several topics including the demand for laws addressing cultural medical practices such as la‘au lapa‘au and lomilomi.
Smith has degrees in Hawaiian studies and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Hawaii. She has served as archivist for The Queen’s Medical Center and the Pacific Island Network of the National Park Service.
