Former Vulcan coach gets Division I job
Former UH-Hilo softball coach Peejay Brun was named head coach at Division I UT Arlington on Tuesday, less than 18 months after she left the Vulcans.
Brun was hired away from Texas State, where she spent nine of the past 11s years as an assistant, covering two stints.
In 2015-16, Brun led the Vulcans to a 63-33-1 record, producing back-to-back 30-win seasons.
Brun developed an NFCA All-America selection, eight all-league honorees and two all-region selections in Hilo.
“UT Arlington made an excellent choice in selecting Coach Brun,” UH-Hilo athletic director Pat Guillen said in a release. “I have known Peejay for 20-plus years and worked with her at two different institutions. She is tireless in her pursuit of excellence and is a tremendous role model for her student-athletes.”
Parker Ranch Round-Up Club Rodeo
The 43rd annual Parker Ranch Round-Up Club Rodeo will lasso in two days of rodeo events Sept. 2-3 at the Parker Ranch Rodeo Arena in Waimea.
The action-packed weekend is held annually as a fundraiser to provide educational scholarships for school-age children of Parker Ranch employees.
Family-style fun begins on Sept. 2 at noon with rodeo events, which may include everything from team roping, double mugging, po’o wai u, bull riding, junior bull riding, wahine barrel racing, wahine breakaway roping and more.
Always fun and exciting to watch is the century team roping competition when one team member must be over the age of 50 and their combined ages must be more than 100. The crowd is always on its feet for the keiki barrel racing for participants 12-and-under and the calf scramble.
On Sept. 3 the Round-Up Club, in partnership with Parker Ranch, will be hosting a live horse auction. Come at 9 a.m. to register and view the horses, with the auction to follow the Sunday morning Rodeo slack.
For non-riders, come and experience the fast pace of a Ranch horse auction. There will be a gate ticket fee to attend the auction.
Sunday’s rodeo action begins at noon with more excitement throughout the afternoon.
Food and refreshments will be available both days with ongoing events lasting until 5 p.m.
In addition, a variety of vendors will be on hand both days selling items including western style crafts, clothing and much more.
Tickets are $7 per person in advance from the Parker Ranch Store, located at the Parker Ranch Center and at the Parker Ranch Headquarters in Waimea, or they can be purchased for $8 at the gate on rodeo days. Children 12-and-under are free.

Fro Hawaii hoops clinics
Fro Hawaii Basketball Academy is holding Sunday basketball clinics through Oct. 1 at Papaikou Gym and Waimea District Park.
Ages 9-11 camp from 10-11:30 a.m. and ages 12-18 camp from noon-1:30 p.m. The fee of $25 includes a reversible jersey.
Also, Fro Hawaii will hold a biddy basketball camp for ages 5-8 and beginning 9-year-olds from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Papaikou Gym. The fee of $40 includes lunch and a camp T-shirt.
