In conjunction with the Volcano Art Center Gallery exhibit, “Live Long and Prosper Mighty ‘Ohi‘a,” artist John Dawson will share his art as well as personal stories and inspiration from 7-9 p.m. Aug. 31 at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus.

The event also will celebrate Dawson’s 80th birthday.

“Live Long and Prosper Mighty ‘Ohi‘a” is open to the public 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily starting Saturday through Oct. 8 at the VAC Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Dawson also will attend a special opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Saturday.

Dawson’s past artwork is included within the maps provided to all visitors to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as well as the stunning educational display inside the Kilauea Visitor Center.

One of Dawson’s proudest accomplishments is the Nature in America stamp series which includes a lively depiction of the Hawaiian rain forest created for the U.S. Postal Service.

Dawson’s resume includes many major assignments and has appeared in national publications for the National Geographic Society, National Wildlife Federation, Audubon Society, United Nations and the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, among others. With decades of experience, Dawson’s work continues to captivate and grace the walls of many island residents who appreciate Hawaii’s native flora and fauna.

“VAC is honored to celebrate 80 years of art and life,” said gallery manager Emily C. Weiss. “Join us for a special evening with the artist.”

The presentation is free with an optional $5 donation.

The evening is part of a once-a-month Thursday night series at the Volcano Art Center, focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and our environment.

The series is intended to inspire, enhance appreciation of art and life experience, while fostering community connections.
