Hawaii County has hired a contractor to remove mold from a building at the wastewater treatment plant in Hilo.

The building includes a break room and laboratory. Mold was found as a leaking roof was replaced last year, and the Department of Environmental Management brought in a trailer for employees to use as an alternative break room. Some employees were relocated, the department said at the time.

A study found mold on top of a bookshelf and blueprints, behind bulletin boards and in drywall and drop ceilings.

The $410,000 mold remediation contract was awarded to Isemoto Contracting.

Bill Kucharski, Environmental Management director, said the work should be done in December.
