The Big Island Beekeepers Association is creating a buzz with the announcement of its 2017 Hawaii Honey Challenge.
Beekeeper enthusiasts are invited to submit a sample of their “seasons best” raw honey samples for the mid-October judging competition. The Honey Challenge is open to any state beekeeper who wants to submit a raw unprocessed honey sample for a formal blind taste and presentation judging.
The judging panel consists of area food critics, chefs and taste testers that will look for color, clarity, aroma, texture and taste of each honey entry. Prizes (and bragging rights) will be awarded to the top three scoring entries.
Following the formal judging, there will be a People’s Choice award for the honey entry that gets the most votes from a public taste testing Nov. 3 during Hilo’s annual First Friday Black and White Night.
“We (BIBA) are a group of amateur and professional beekeepers whose goal is to care for bees, share our knowledge and experiences with others and making people aware of the critical role bees play in world food production,” said Jim Klyman, the club’s media representative. “And tell about all the cool stuff you can make with things in a hive.”
