UHH senior Kayela Santiago scored her first career goal and had an assist. She scored 11 minutes into the second half on a breakaway.
With four minutes left, Jamie Salas scored off a Santiago assist. The Arizona State transfer and Santiago caught the Pace goalie on a 2-1 breakaway.
UHH senior goalie Jenna Hufford recorded the shutout and had four saves. The Vuls (1-0) had 12 shots, including six on goal.
In the men’s match, Hawaii Pacific walloped UHH 4-1 in something of an ominous sign.
The Vuls (0-1) were picked to finish last out of 14 teams in the PacWest’s preseason poll.
Xahil McDonald scored to give UHH a 1-0 halftime lead in a nonleague match, which turned lopsided after the break.
The Sharks (1-0) scored all their goals in the second half. HPU had a whopping 20 shots, including nine on goal.
The men’s and women’s teams both take on Chaminade on Monday in nonconference matches.
