As an extension to its summer baseball and softball season, Hilo Little League is conducting fall-ball starting Sept. 30 through the end of the year.

Coach applicants, baseball and female softball players ages 8-14 are required to register by Sept. 15.

Two Manliguis scholarships available

Applications are being accepted for the Larry Manliguis scholarship. A pair of $300 scholarships will be awarded, one to a Hilo High graduate, donated by the school’s class of 1960, and another given to a Big Isle graduate, funded by the Hawaii alumni tournament.

To be eligible, applicants must:

1. have a 2.5 GPA for their senior year;

2. write a one-page essay on how they intend to give back to their community;

3. plan to attend college

4. played a varsity sport.

The deadline to apply is Sept. 30

The Waiakea Uka Athletic Association has a few spots open in the Mustang division (born between Sept. 1, 2007 and Aug. 31, 2011).

Top Big Island winners at the Hawaii Pacific International Trapshooting Championship at the county trap and skeet range were Garrett Zane (singles 193/200), Gina Ho’a (handicap 90/100), Samuel Cummings (junior 339/400), Mark Hironaga (A Class 347/400), Ronald Nakamura (B class 360/400), Larry Aker (C Class 356/400), Earl Higa (D class 342/400).

Other Big Island competitors that won awards at the tournament were Neil Arakaki, Pomai Thoene, Delance Wiegele and Dylan Astrande.

The next Hawaii State Trapshooting Championship is scheduled for February 2018.

Battle of the Bay hits mat Sept. 16

Registration for the eighth annual Battle of the Bay, set for Sept. 16 at Hilo Armory, is available online at www.tigerbjj.com.

Youth basketball clinic Sept. 16 at Panaewa

Big Island Sports Academy will host a basketball clinic for boys and girls between grades 4-6 at Panaewa Park Gym from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 16.

The clinic is designed to provide basic concepts in all facets of basketball skill development, with an emphasis on the fundamentals and will be led by coach John Livsey – Big Island Sports Academy basketball coordinator – and current and former members of the UH-Hilo men’s and women’s basketball teams will be on hand to assist.

Ernest Nakamoto aced the the 171-yard 16th hole Wednesday at Hilo Municipal Golf Course using a 4-iron.

• Chris Bailado, while playing with the Po’akolu Golf Club, aced the 147-yard eighth hole Wednesday at Hilo Muni using a 4-hybrid.
