It’s been a busy summer of service projects for the South Hilo and Hilo Rotary clubs.

On Aug. 26, more than 40 Rotarians from both clubs and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation collaborated on a Weinberg Friends Program, providing 100 hours of hands-on service by painting the Kihei Pua Emergency Shelter for Women and Families of HOPE Services Hawaii on Kapiolani Street.

And throughout the summer, the Rotary Club of Hilo joined the Hawaii Police Department’s annual Backpack Drive for needy and homeless children to start off the new school year on a good note. The club collected 102 backpacks along with a water bottle included in each pack.

“It’s an important part of feeling like a child ‘belongs,’” said Wally Wong, the club’s community service director. “Research shows that underprivileged keiki do better in school when they are not ‘singled out’ as different. Having a brand new backpack may seem like a small thing, but its effect can be powerful.”
