On senior night, it was the seniors doing the damage for the Waveriders. Dallas “Malosi” Laasaga found the end zone on a pair of touchdown runs, Ismail Souza was a terror with a pair of sacks and nearly a half-dozen tackles for loss and quarterback Kekoa Ilagan-LeBlanc accounted for a trio of scores in the rout.
It’s the Waveriders second big win in a row after dropping four straight to open up the season, moving into sole possession of second place in Division I.
A 21-point first quarter got the Waveriders on track in the first half, capitalizing on Ka Makani errors. Laasaga got the party started with a powerful 20-yard run, and the ‘Riders flipped Hiram Anakalea’s fumble recovery into a score, too.
It wasn’t long after that Ilagan-LeBlanc dropped back and found Anthony “Head” Trevino for a 24-yard score, pushing the Waveriders lead to 21-0.
After playing some solid defense, things went south in a hurry for Hawaii Prep near the end of the first half. Kealakehe’s Richard Manuzzi started the chain reaction, forcing a safety with a tackle in the end zone. On the ensuing kick, Bryton Lewi scored on a 73-yard return.
Hawaii Prep had an opportunity for points before the end of the half, but back-to-back penalties forced Ka Makani into a 1st and 35 situation. It didn’t end well, with a fumble setting up Kealakehe inside the 10-yard line. A play later, Illagan-LeBlanc ran it in for his third touchdown of the night.
After Trevino ran in a two-point conversion on a bad snap on the extra point, the Waveriders had posted 17 points while only running a single offensive play.
Kealakehe amassed 202 yards in the first half, a large chunk of that coming on an 85-yard catch and run by Ikaika Pali.
Ka Makani, which struggled to keep pace with the chains, had negative-36 yards through the first 24 minutes. It didn’t get better in the second half.
The highlights for Hawaii Prep were a nice interception by Umi Kealoha and Matt Pouchain’s fumble recovery in the second half.
The Waveriders’ momentum carried over to open the second half. On the first snap of the third quarter, Raymond Skillern scampered 60 yards untouched for a score.
With the running clock moving at a breakneck pace, neither team managed to do much for the rest of the half until Laasaga punched in his second score of the night to make it 54-0.
