Well, that could have gone better.
UH-Hilo came up empty in Honolulu to open Pacific West Conference volleyball play, dropping a 25-22, 26-24, 25-20 decision Saturday to Hawaii Pacific.
Siera Green and Lucee Fitzgerald were both solid for the Vulcans (3-5, 0-2 PacWest) with 13 kills apiece, but right side hitter Randi Hunter’s absence (flu) was felt for the second straight night.
UH-Hilo looked poised to tie the match in Game 2 after Green’s kills provided set point, but the Sharks (4-6, 2-0) scored the final three points of the set on a Vulcan service error, an attack error and a ball handling error (26-24).
Cameryn Collie led the Sharks with 12 kills.
The Vulcans hit .364 in the first set, but were outdone by Hawaii Pacific’s .475 clip.
Efficiency wasn’t UH-Hilo’s problem. Green hit .367, Fitzgerald .300 and freshman Ashton Jessee added six kills.
After playing their first eight matches on the road, the Vulcans debut at home Friday against Academy of Art then welcome Fresno Pacific on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
• On Friday night, Green tallied 11 kills, and Evelin Solyomvari, playing in her first match in two seasons, had nine, but UH-Hilo lost to Chaminade 25-18, 25-23, 17-25, 25-18.
The Silverwords (7-3, 2-0) held a 55-37 advantage in kills.
