Bank of Hawaii is warning the public about a telephone scam involving callers to customers and non-bank customers claiming they can obtain a better interest rate by providing personal information.
The caller reportedly says they need a name and credit card in order to secure the better rate. The scammers are calling numbers at random, trying to find credit card holders. The scammers are spoofing a real Bank of Hawaii number.
Bank of Hawaii said in a Tuesday news release it does not request personal information from customers such as Social Security numbers, pins, passwords or account numbers via call, email or texts. Any such request for personal information should be viewed as highly suspicious and recipients are advised to hang up, the release said.
Recipients also are advised to confirm the validity of suspicious requests by contacting the company supposedly making the call using phone numbers or email addresses that are known to be legitimate.
A Bank of Hawaii customer who mistakenly provided personal information should immediately contact the bank at 1-888-643-3888 and press “0.”
