Join award-winning author and artist Caren Loebel-Fried for a book-signing and presentation for “A Perfect Day for an Albatross” from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus.
“A Perfect Day for an Albatross,” a new picture book by Loebel-Fried, is a lively story that sweeps readers into an albatross’ world of wind, rolling seas, boisterous dancing and their intense commitment to one another and their nestlings. Set on Midway Atoll, where 72 percent of the world’s Laysan albatrosses make their nests, Malie, an albatross, must protect her egg until her mate returns. The book features block print art with flowing watercolors.
Loebel-Fried spent five weeks on Midway Atoll counting and researching albatrosses, and shares her love of wildlife and passion for conservation through art and story. Guest speaker Cynthia Vanderlip will be on hand to discuss her experiences on Kure Atoll.
Copies of the book will be available for sale after the presentations, as well as original framed art and giclees from the book. This presentation is free; however, a $5 donation is greatly appreciated.
The evening is part of a once-a-month Thursday night series at Volcano Art Center, focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and the environment.
Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus is located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village. For more information, call 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.
