Feast to benefit Pahoa students

The Pahoa Schools Booster Club and Scholarship Fund is hosting its eat-in or takeout Scholars Feast from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Pahoa.

The $15 feast includes a choice of vegan lasagna prepared by Tin Shack Bakery or rib eye steak with spice and herb rub, with a selection of sides and cookies from Island Naturals, Black Rock Cafe, Stratos, Malama Market, Ning’s, Bananarama Bakery, Kalani Honua and Boogie Woogie. Water and biodegradable containers from Island Sustainables also will be available.

Ice from Paul’s Repair Service will keep things cool.

Proceeds will go toward scholarships for high school seniors from Pahoa-area schools.

Community rally slated for Oct. 21

Dr. Frederick Nitta is putting on a community rally at 11 a.m. Oct. 21 at the Mo‘oheau Park bandstand in downtown Hilo, focusing on drugs, homelessness and crime on the Big Island.

Community members will march at 10 a.m. from the Kamehameha statue to the bandstand and have the opportunity to speak about these Big Island issues affecting the community.

AARP retirement workshop offered

To help people plan for retirement, AARP Hawaii is hosting a free “Think of Your Future” workshop from 1-4 p.m. Oct. 21 at the county Aging and Disability Resource Center, 1055 Kinoole St. in Hilo.

No individual advice will be given and no products or services promoted or sold. The workshop is just about helping you plan for retirement and you don’t have to be an AARP member to attend.

Holiday event helps nonprofits

Feast on the Beach celebrates its fifth anniversary under the stars at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Lava Lava Beach Club on Anaehoomalu Bay.

The popular holiday event will feature food stations created in conjunction with Paradise Gourmet Catering, along with beer, wine, libations and its signature toes-in-the-sand ambiance.

Entertainment will be headlined by Henry Kapono, who will perform music of Cecilio &Kapono with Johnny Valentine, Alx Kawakami and Blayne Asing. Also performing on stage will be LT Smooth.

A portion of ticket proceeds will benefit Kona Community Hospital Foundation, Hospice of Kona, North Hawaii Hospice, Lava Kids and Hawaii Island Humane Society.

Tickets, priced at $100 per person or $1,500 for a reserved table of 10, are available from participating nonprofit partners.
