Freshman Isaiah Pilanca-Emmsley put touchdowns on the board three different ways, rushing for two, catching one and passing for one, and Zachary Kai accounted for three scores Saturday as the Trojans beat Kohala 60-0 in Pahala.
Ka’u (4-1 BIIF, 4-2) is off this week as it prepares to host Pahoa on Oct. 21 for a chance at a second consecutive championship.
Thanks in large part to the emergence of Pilanca-Emmsley and the strong efforts of Kai, the Trojans have won four league games in a row since a season-opening loss to the Daggers.
Kai threw a touchdown pass to Pilanca-Emmsley late in the second quarter, and Pilanca-Emmsley’s scoring toss to Janslae Badua gave Ka’u a 48-0 lead at the half.
Kai ran for two TDs, including one from 56 yards, Brandon Echalas opened the scoring on a 38-yard run, Badua added a 1-yarder and Manu Kalua-Keliikoa returned an interception 60 yards for a score.
The Cowboys (0-5, 0-6) finish their season at 6 p.m. Friday against Pahoa (3-1, 5-1) at Keaau High.
Ex-Vulcans win qualifier
Former UH-Hilo golfers Issac Jaffurs and Kyeton Littel recently captured Hawaii’s qualifying spot for the 2018 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball.
Jaffurs of Oahu and Maui’s Littel fired a 5-under 67 to win by a shot at Kapalua Bay on Maui.
Littel birdied the 17th and Jaffurs the 18th.
Justin Arcano and Justin Ngan, who represented Hawaii at the last two four-balls, shot 71 to finish seventh.
The 2018 national championship is in May in Florida.
