Cal State East Bay’s surges helped end UH-Hilo’s winning streak at three matches.

The Pioneers defeated the Vulcans 25-16, 25-19, 25-20 on Tuesday night in a nonconference volleyball match in Hayward, Calif.

Siera Green blasted 12 kills for UH-Hilo (7-8), but each time East Bay felt threatened, it simply went on a run.

The first set was tied 13-13 before the Pioneers (12-5) took 12 of the final 15 points. In Game 2, the Vulcans drew to within 18-17, only to lose seven of the next nine points. In the third set, UHH again trailed 18-17 but could never get into a rhythm.

Amber Tai added seven kills for the Vulcans, who hit just .080.

UH-Hilo will return to Pacific West Conference play Wednesday at Holy Names, its fourth match in four days.

Women’s golf: Waiakea graduate Keely Kitamura led UH-Hilo with a second-round 12-over 85 at the Western Washington Invitational in Bellingham, Wash., as the Vulcans closed their first road trip of the season in last place at 112-over 696 after a 354.
