The Hawaii Island Food Alliance and KTA Super Stores will celebrate National Food Day from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 24 at KTA’s Puainako, Waimea and Keauhou locations.

The Hawaii Island Food Alliance and KTA Super Stores will celebrate National Food Day from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 24 at KTA’s Puainako, Waimea and Keauhou locations.

Food Day aims to support and promote local food and farmers, as well as healthy foods, healthy eating and safe food handling.

Master gardeners from the University of Hawaii and The Kohala Center will offer free vegetable seedlings and seeds to grow at home. And enjoy free samples of locally grown and produced hummus, chili pepper water, spices, chocolate and more, while supplies last.

Learn how cacao is made into chocolate and about Korean natural farming. Also learn about food safety through proper handling, storage and preparation, and how local programs are supporting local farmers and sustainable agriculture, reducing hunger and improving access to healthy food on Hawaii Island.

Each store will offer an assortment of featured products. Local farmers and producers who will feature their locally grown and produced foods include Hawai‘i Ulu Cooperative, Ho‘ola Farms, Hawai‘i’s Simple Gourmet, Mokuwai Piko Poi, Native Feast Ventures and Adaptations Inc.

KTA will feature healthy specials in its deli and seafood departments.

The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank, will assist with applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps) at KTA Puainako and Waimea. They also will accept monetary and food donations to help feed families in need on Hawaii Island.
