Authorities are investigating the theft of two county vehicles that were later found torched in South Kona.

According to police documents, a white 2008 Honda Civic and a white 2006 Jeep Liberty were stolen sometime between Oct. 7 and 9 from the Department of Public Works baseyard in Kealakekua.

Maj. Robert Wagner with the Hawaii Police Department said the vehicles were locked behind a gate with the keys in their ignitions. Suspects also damaged the gate upon leaving.

The vehicles were found burnt a few days later in the Honaunau area.
