‘Mana Wahine’ show postponed

‘Mana Wahine’ show postponed

The Okareka Dance Company performance of “Mana Wahine,” scheduled for Tuesday (Oct. 24) at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center, was postponed because of travel issues.

The performance is expected to be rescheduled for February 2018. An announcement will be made once a new date is finalized.

Pick pumpkins at Waiakea High

Pick the perfect pumpkin for Halloween during the Waiakea High School PTSA’s Pumpkin Patch and Craft Fair from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 21) at the campus gym.

In addition to pumpkins and craft booths, the event will include food, games, a petting zoo, haunted house, live music, a dummy-roping demonstration and more.

Pumpkins can be purchased online at whspumpkinpatch.ecwid.com.

Proceeds will go to support Waiakea High School programs, Waiakea High School Band Boosters, Waiakea Elementary School Student Council and Waiakeawaena Elementary School Student Council.

UN Day event at Nani Mau Gardens

In observance of United Nations Day, the U.N. Association of the U.S. Hawaii Island Chapter is hosting its annual luncheon meeting from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Nani Mau Gardens.

The theme of the event is “Global Goals, Local Leaders: Achieving Zero Hunger and Zero Food Waste on Hawaii Island.”

The keynote speaker is Brooke Hansen, affiliate associate professor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. She also is a member of the UH-Hilo Blue Zones committee, Slow Food Hawaii Island Chapter and the Hawaii Island Food Alliance.

Hilo Betsuin to honor veterans

The Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin’s 22nd annual Veterans Appreciation Service will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Nov. 5.

All veterans, spouses, family and friends — regardless of religious preference — are invited to participate.

Featured speaker will be Donna Hara Shimizu. Born and raised on the Big Island, Hara Shimizu is part of a military family with a combined 309 years of military service, of which 269 were with the Hawaii National Guard. In 2010, she retired as a recruiter after serving 35 years with the 291st Combat Communications Squadron, Hawaii National Guard.
