The nonprofit Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center is hosting a free talk Thursday from noon-1 p.m. in the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney as part of its “Finding Solutions, Growing Peace” brown bag lunch series.

This month’s speaker is Julie Mitchell, Ku‘ikahi executive director, on the topic “Conflict Resolution Day: Mediation as a Tool for Peace.”

“Conflict Resolution Day is an annual international celebration held every third Thursday in October,” Mitchell said. “It promotes awareness of peaceful means of resolving disagreements and encourages the use of conflict resolution in schools, families, businesses, communities, government and the legal system.”

Professionally trained volunteer mediators also will conduct a live-action mediation to demonstrate how mediators empower people to find their own best solutions.

In addition to her administrative duties, Mitchell also is a mediator, facilitator and trainer at Ku‘ikahi. She has a bachelor of arts in sociology from the University of California at Irvine and a Certificate in Professional Development for Not-for-Profit Management from Hawaii Community College.

Brown bag lunch series attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch, enjoy an informal and educational talk-story session and meet others interested in “Finding Solutions, Growing Peace.”

The brown bag talks are the third Thursdays of each month. The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney is located at 655 Kilauea Ave. in Hilo. The series is made possible thanks in part to funding from the Atherton Family Foundation.
