Pork from specially raised pigs and prepared in a variety of ways will be a featured menu item during the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Hawaii’s 19th annual Taste of Hilo from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 22 at Sangha Hall.

The Taste of Hilo annually features the culinary skills of more than 35 chefs, restaurants, and patisseries, who provide their talents, ingredients and staff to make this annual event a success.

Organizers said this year’s event will feature pigs raised using natural farming practices, which eliminates the need for antibiotics, vaccines and hormones. Developed by master Kyu Han Cho of the Janong Natural Farming Institute of South Korea, the sustainable-farming method uses generations-old practices from Japan and South Korea, combined with Cho’s graduate education in agriculture and veterinary science.

Mike DuPonte from the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources is serving as the resource person for the project. University Dining Services by Sodexo will prepare several different dishes with the pork.

Through the years, the Japanese Chamber has raised more than $160,000 through Taste of Hilo to support educational programs at the Hawaii Community College.

Presale tickets are $55 and can be purchased by calling the chamber’s office at 934-0177 or by email at jccih@jccih.org. Tickets also can be purchased at the door for $70, if the event has not been sold out.
