Boys, Girls Club gets OHA grant
The Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island recently was one of three recipients statewide of education grants from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
A grant totaling $250,638 will be used to implement BGCBI’s Mohala Ike Project through 2019. The Mohala Ike Project is designed to assist club members ages 5-17 “to succeed academically by skillfully instilling lifelong learning habits in these youth of Hawaii Island communities,” said Jasmine Branco, BGCBI director of development.
The goal of OHA’s Educational Grant Program is to improve Native Hawaiian student proficiency in reading and math to improve their standardized test scores.

Public invited to Barrio Fiesta
The Filipino American Heritage Month organizing committee at the University of Hawaii at Hilo invites the community to its colorful and entertaining Barrio Fiesta at 5 p.m. Friday (Oct. 27) at the Campus Center Plaza.
The Barrio Fiesta features intricately choreographed cultural dances of the Philippines performed by students of the Filipino Studies Program, Bayanihan Club and the Hilo Visayan Club.
The fiesta also serves as the opening ceremonies of the inaugural International Conference on Multidisciplinary Filipino studies, a two-day gathering of researchers from around the world sharing and exchanging ideas about Filipinos and the Philippines.
Galaxy Forum Nov. 8 in Waimea
The International Lunar Observatory Association is presenting Galaxy Forum Hawaii 2017 — Future of Astronomy in Hawaii: The Next 100 Years from 4:15-6:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Punawaiola Room at Kahilu Town Hall in Waimea.
The forum is free to the public.
The provisional program includes talks titled “Hawaii Cosmic Culture,” “Mauna Kea 21st Century Observatories — Galaxy Center Research” and “ILOA 22nd Century Headquarters.”
