Study finds Kauai timeshare industry generated billions
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — A recent study found the timeshare industry on Kauai generated about $1 billion in economic output in 2016 and about $5.3 billion in consumer and business spending.
The study was conducted by the timeshare industry’s primary researcher, nonprofit ARDA International Foundation.
Timeshare units made up 31.1 percent of the total 8,444 visitor units last year on the island, the Kauai Visitors Bureau stated.
Timeshares were narrowly behind hotels in that category, with hotels making up 31.4 percent of visitor units. Vacation rental units and condo units each made up about 18 percent of the island’s visitor units.
As far as state and local taxes, Kauai timeshares in 2016 brought in $48 million. Timeshares also contributed 5,938 jobs, the study said.
Judge orders man to write nice things about ex-girlfriend
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A judge on Maui handed down an unorthodox sentence to a man who pleaded no contest to violating a protection order preventing him from contacting his ex-girlfriend.
Judge Rhonda Loo on Friday ordered Daren Young to write 144 compliments about his ex-girlfriend in response to the 144 “nasty” text messages and calls he is accused of sending her.
Young, 30, received time served for spending 157 days in jail before being sentenced. Besides being told to pay the compliments, he also received two years of probation, $2,400 in fines and 200 hours of community service.
Tax changes proposed by panel cause concern
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A Maui Vacation Rental Association official fears two bills on property tax classifications recommended for approval by a Maui County Council committee could lead to higher taxes for Maui County property owners.
County officials say it is too early to speculate because new rates have not been set. The bills are up for first reading Friday.
Although the budget committee did not set property tax rates in its proposed bills, Tom Croly of the Maui Vacation Rental Association says that, more than likely, taxes would go up for those affected by the changes.
