The Skinny: While the consistency was hardly ideal, Hawaii played “up” long enough on Saturday to pull out a 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 25-17 Big West victory over UC Santa Barbara. Just as the Rainbow Wahine (16-7, 10-2) rebounded from Friday’s gut-wrenching five-set loss at No. 23 Cal Poly, junior hitter McKenna Granato rebounded from her near-.000 hitting from the previous night with a season-high .436, putting down 21 kills over the 2 hours and 9 minutes in Rob Gym.
Granato added 17 digs for her 10th double-double and had half of the team’s six aces. Senior middle Emily Maglio finished with 13 kills and senior libero Savanah Kahakai had 24 of Hawaii’s 77 digs for her 13th consecutive match in double digits.
Something Hawaii will need to work on as it heads into its final home matches next week is serve-receive. The Wahine gave up a season-high 14 aces to the Gauchos (6-17, 5-5), seven coming in the final two sets.
Hawaii coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos was pleased with the victory but little else. While the Wahine did cut down their service errors (6), giving up 14 aces to the opponent was not acceptable.
“It was ugly volleyball, we played ugly volleyball,” she said in a telephone call. “I don’t even know what to say anymore. Even after telling them that we’re probably not going to win the Big West but maybe if we win out, win out 3-0 (in sweeps), maybe someone might give us something for the postseason. But in order for the NCAA to see we deserve it, we can’t be playing like this.”
The Wahine host Cal State Northridge on Friday and Long Beach State on Saturday, both matches starting at 7 p .m. Saturday’s match is senior night for Maglio, Kahakai, Clare-Marie Anderson, Kalei Greeley, Gianna Guinasso and Kendra Koelsch.

The skinny: UC Riverside had everything to play for. Hawaii did not.
That amounted to a 4-0 Highlanders rout of the Rainbow Wahine soccer team in UH’s 2017 season finale in Riverside, Calif., on Sunday.
UH, which was already out of the running for the four-team Big West tournament, finished its season at 6-10-1 overall and last in the conference at 1-6-1. Riverside (8-10-2, 5-3) outshot UH 17-2 and jumped into third on its senior day to qualify for the tourney.
The Wahine finished in last place, where they were predicted to finish in the preseason coaches poll. They opened their final road trip with a 3-0 loss at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, and have now lost 12 straight Big West road games going back to 2015. UH has yet to qualify for the BWC tournament in six seasons in the league.
“I told the kids today, you know what, let’s just go out and have a good time with it,” UH coach Michele Nagamine said in a postgame phone interview. “You’re not playing for anything, but conversely you’re playing for everything, because this is how you start off (next season). The good thing is, we got to clear the bench.”
The seventh-year coach spread around minutes to all players who made the road trip, including senior goalkeeper Evelyn Fierros, who relieved Alexis Mata to make her Wahine debut late in the game. Fierros allowed a goal and stopped a shot in 18 minutes.
UH lost key senior defenders Bo Samson (before Big West play) and Paige Okazaki (early in Big West play) to knee injuries, meaning the Wahine were exception ally young in the back for their most meaningful games.
“That’s not the way we wanted to go out, but for now we’re looking to build for the future,” Nagamine said. “We got some quality minutes all year long for our very young players. There were some very good learning experiences … there’s a lot we’re going to take away and build on.”
