6 states seek to join challenge of newest travel ban
HONOLULU (AP) — Six U.S. states want to intervene in Hawaii’s lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s newest travel ban.
The states of California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and Washington filed a motion Monday asking to be parties in Hawaii’s lawsuit. They agree with Hawaii that the ban is unconstitutional.
Hawaii is challenging Trump’s proclamation issued last month targeting about 150 million potential travelers from Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, along with some Venezuelan government officials and their families.
A federal judge in Hawaii granted the state’s request to block the policy from taking effect. The U.S. government is appealing that ruling to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
State Attorney General Doug Chin says the motion shows Hawaii is not the only state harmed by the policy.
Man charged with killing girlfriend, 3-year-old boy
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man killed his girlfriend and her 3-year-old son, then wrapped their bodies in sheets and dumped them in a remote part of the state before they were reported missing two years ago, prosecutors said in charges unsealed Monday.
Emily Almiron, 23, and her son, Gabriel, have never been found, but authorities filed aggravated murder charges against her then-boyfriend. Christopher Richard Poulson, 28, was arrested during the weekend in Hawaii, where he moved shortly after being confronted with evidence collected more than two years during an investigation by Orem, Utah, police and the FBI, prosecutors said.
Police say a cadaver dog detected the presence of human remains in the trunk of a Mustang Poulson sold cheaply shortly after Almiron and her son vanished Sept. 8, 2015. A roommate later told police a hammer disappeared about the same time Almiron went missing, charging documents state.
Authorities also cite records showing Poulson drove to dumpsters near their apartment in Orem the day after they disappeared, according to GPS data in charging documents. He then bought a shovel and work gloves and drove to a rural area, according to the charges.
The following day, he bought sheets and another pair of gloves before leaving her Toyota Prius in a parking lot in St. George, Utah.
Lifeguards rescue 13 as winter waves hit Oahu
HONOLULU (AP) — Lifeguards rescued 13 people at the end of last week as powerful waves pounded the northern shores of Oahu, kicking off what officials say is the most dangerous time of year.
Emergency services officials say lifeguards took about 2,800 preventative actions, such as stopping unprepared people from going into the ocean, in addition to the rescues Friday. High-surf warnings for northern and western beaches also were issued, advising people about strong currents and dangerous shore breaks.
Lifeguard Jeff Okuyama says the biggest swells occur during the winter, so swimming and snorkeling is not an option for the unexperienced.
