A 24-year-old Puna man found with a gunshot wound to his head in his yard on Oct. 29 died Monday night in a Honolulu hospital, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office identified him as Nicholas J. Theiss of Kurtistown. Theiss died at The Queen’s Medical Center.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
Police arrested 28-year-old Mahdi Hemmat, who lives in the same house, at the scene. Hemmat was later released pending further investigation and police Lt. Miles Chong said last week it’s possible the shooting was accidental.
Chong said Hemmat called 911 after the shooting and a rifle was recovered at the scene.
