Still playing without two of their top three hitters (Lucee Fitzgerald and Randi Hunter), the Vulcans (8-15, 5-11 Pacific West Conference) were a step behind after Point Loma pulled away from a 9-9 tie in Game 1. They hit just .102 and had a total of 27 team kills.

Jaime Cymbaluk led the Sea Lions (10-15, 7-10) with 11 kills while Holly Persson led all players with 21 digs. Point Loma lost by four sets Sept. 30 in Hilo.

Starting a string in which they will play matches on three consecutive days, UH-Hilo moved up the California coast to play Azusa Pacific on Thursday and then Concordia on Friday.
