Hawaii County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Anmar Alnagem recently won a major victory for animal justice in the community, successfully prosecuting a felony charge of animal cruelty in the first degree that resulted in the jury returning a unanimous guilty verdict.

In recognition of his efforts, the Hawaii Island Humane Society presented its Champion of Animal Welfare Certificate to Alnagem “for his commitment to animal justice.”

“We are very grateful that the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney and the jury took this case of animal cruelty so seriously,” said HIHS Executive Director Donna Whitaker. “Our mission is to prevent cruelty to animals here on Hawaii Island and we thank everyone involved.”

The Hawaii Island Humane Society responds to and investigates reports of animal neglect, abuse and cruelty.

Intentional cruelty, or abuse, is knowingly depriving an animal of food, water, shelter or veterinary care; or maliciously torturing, maiming or killing an animal. HIHS animal control officers are trained to educate owners as needed about proper care for their animals.
