Hilo attorney Maile Lu‘uwai has announced her candidacy for lieutenant governor as a Democrat.
Lu‘uwai said her campaign motto is “Be the change” and she wants to be an advocate within the state administration on issues such as homelessness and affordable housing, education and open government.
She said she will bring “leadership with a backbone” and look for out-of-the-box solutions.
“The only way to be the change is to have a seat at the table,” Lu‘uwai said when asked why she is seeking the position.
She is president of the Keaukaha-Panaewa Farmers Association and has her own law practice.
Lu‘uwai worked as a legislative analyst for former U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye and a deputy corporation counsel for former Maui Mayor Linda Lingle.
Other announced candidates for the position include state Sen. Josh Green, state Sen. Will Espero, state Sen. Jill Tokuda, former state Board of Education member Kim Coco Iwamoto, Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa.
The election is in November 2018.
