High school basketball: Kaiser overpowers Hilo at Waiakea-Keaau tourney

Kaiser looked like one of the teams to beat on Day 1 of the Waiakea-Keaau boys basketball tournament, racing past Hilo 74-40 on Wednesday at the Warriors’ gym.

Jaymin Khan-Smith scored 20 points for the OIA Cougars, who outscored the Vikings 40-15 in the second half.

Kekaukahi Alameda led Hilo with 10 points.

Waiakea 67, Parker 37: William Soares scored 17 points as the Warriors welcomed the Bulls back to varsity play.

Connor Brown paced the Bulls with 18 points.

Kohala 56, Waiakea 2 44: Isaiah Salvador (13 points), Elijah Antonio (12) and John Nicolas (11) each reached double figures as the Cowboys beat one Warriors entrant to advance to face the other at 8 p.m. Thursday in the second round.

Makana Kaehuaea-Credo tallied 10 points for Waiakea.

Mid-Pacific 47, Kealakehe 36: Bobby Thompson led the way with 10 points for the Owls, who will face Kaiser in the second round.

Lewko Lai led the Waveriders with 18 points, and Qishaun Gallon had 10.

Keaau 57, Ka’u 29: Patrick Mears scored 14 points, Gabe Bergin 11, and Branden Pagala added seven points to lead the Cougars.

Andre Carvalho scored 10 points to lead the Trojans, who trailed 35-11 at halftime.

Seabury Hall 60, St. Joseph 45: Kama Konohia, a 6-5 junior, scored 19 points, Noah Payne added 18 points, and Isaiah Payne had 15 points for the Spartans of the MIL, who are coached by former UH-Hilo standout Scott Prather.

Keegan Scanlan scored 24 points, Ruka Suda had 11, and Dylan Costales added seven points for the Cardinals, who got three points from Siam Thomas to account for all their scoring.
