NASA scientist
to discuss Mars
Bruce Jakosky, principal investigator for the NASA Mars MAVEN satellite mission, will present a talk titled, “The Evolution of Mars Atmosphere and Implications for Terra-forming Mars (or why you should be grateful for the Earth’s magnetic field every day)” at 7 p.m. Friday at the University of Hawaii-Hilo Science and Technology Building, Room 108.
The Earth is habitable because of a thin layer of oxygen and nitrogen gas blanketing the planet. Mars, the only other planet in the solar system thought to be potentially habitable, has virtually no atmosphere. Was Mars always like this or has the atmosphere changed through time? And what does the magnetic field have to do with any of this?
These are just some of the questions the NASA MAVEN satellite mission to Mars was designed to answer and that will be discussed by Jakosky. The talk is free and sponsored by Hawaii Space Grant Consortium..
Zonta says ‘No’ to human trafficking
The Zonta Club of Hilo advocacy committee presents “Human Trafficking on Hawaii Island,” a panel discussion from 6-7:30 p.m. today in the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel’s Moku Ola Ballroom.
The event is free and open to the public.
Kathleen McGilvray of the Hawaii Island YWCA will moderate. Panel speakers include Hawaii Police Department Lt. Lucille Melemai; Melody Stone, HI Coalition Against Human Trafficking; Renee Perrington, Ho‘ola Na Pua; Suzanna Tiapula, Hawaii County Prosecutor’s Office; and Zahava Zaidoff, certified prevention specialist.

Family event
slated in Pahoa
Laulima Pahoa presents an afternoon and early evening of music, food and activities for the entire family during its Second Saturday (Dec. 9) gathering from 2 p.m.-pau at the Pahoa Community Center.
The entertainment lineup includes Lee Eisenstein, Sisters of the Sacred Heartbeat, Nicholas Sky and the Michael Riley Band.
There will be games, art and face painting in the Chris Madsen Fun Room and a community potluck at 6 p.m. Michelle Tippins of the HI Veteran’s Cannabis Alliance will have an information booth.
The free event is co-sponsored by Mainstreet Pahoa and Hawaii County.
