KOHALA COAST — Former University of UH-Hilo golfer Nick Mason is still atop the leaderboard after the second day of competition at the Hawaii State Open at Mauna Lani, but he is no longer alone.
Kyle Suppa, a sophomore at the University of Southern California, shot a 5-under 67 on the Francis H. I’i Brown North Course on Saturday to tie Mason at 8-under for the tournament.
Mason shot a modest 3-under 69 to maintain a one stroke lead on the Men’s Open professional field. He is followed by Tadd Fujikawa, who shot a 67 on Day 2.
Suppa is dominating the Championship field by eight strokes, with Joe Sanders and Remington Hirano tied for second at even par. Suppa made seven birdies on Saturday.
Britney Yada remains in the lead in the Women’s Open with a two-day total of 139. Reese Guzman is the low amateur in the Women’s Open at 148.
David Ishii leads the Senior Open after firing the low round of 7-under 65. He gained a leg up on his competition with a hole-in-one on hole No. 3 on the South Course.
Suppa and Mason will tee off with the final group Sunday. Fujikawa and Robby Ormand will join them for the 10:50 a.m. start from Mauna Lani.
