During the week of Dec. 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; South Hilo, six; Puna and Ka‘u, three each.

So far this year, there have been 1,135 DUI arrests compared to 1,088 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.3 percent.
There have been 1,336 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,416 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.
To date, there have been 32 official fatalities, the same as this time last year. There have also been four vehicle-related deaths this year police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and two within the boundaries of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
