It wasn’t too long ago that Hilo and Waiakea were competitive rivals on the softball field, last playing each other for a BIIF championship in 2014.
The Vikings won it that year, but the Warriors have dominated ever since, taking the last three Division I titles and showing a sizable gap between the two crosstown foes.
On a rainy Friday, Waiakea walloped Hilo 17-0 in a five-inning TKO game, pounding out 15 hits and cheering for several players who had monster performances.
Jolene Hirata batted 4 for 5 with three RBIs, Loke Mackwelung was 3 for 5 with three RBIs, Alize Ka’apana went 2 for 5 with an RBI. Lyndsey Carvalho added three RBIs, and Halee Sweat, Ziara Tosie and Sarahlin Likiaksa had two RBIs each for the Warriors (7-0).
Sweat fired a two-hitter with five walks and seven strikeouts.
Lauren Sugai took the loss.
No one paired hits for the Viks (1-6).
At Kapaau, Kohala swept Pahoa 14-1 and 21-1.
In Game 1, Mikayla Kekoa fired a one-htter in the 14-1 five-inning TKO win. The junior right-hander walked none and whiffed seven.
She also had a homer and three RBIs, Symphony Kauanoe had two hits and three RBIs, and Laila Caravalho had a triple and RBI.
Jania Chang took the loss.
In Game 2, Caravalho and Pili Kaai combined on a no-hitter in the 21-1 three-inning TKO win. Caravalho pitched 2 2/3 innings, walked five and struck out three for the win. Kaai got one out with the bases loaded.
Kekoa had another homer and four RBIs, Missy Fernandez had a homer and four RBIs, and Caravalho clubbed a homer and had two RBIs for the Cowgirls (5-4).
Staysia Hoomana took the loss for the Daggers (0-9).

Softball
Waiakea 16, Keaau 1: Johnacy Mackwelung hit three doubles, one with the bases loaded, and drove in six runs as the host Warriors pounded out 16 hits at home.
Brandee Chinen tripled and doubled and Halee Sweat was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and picked up the win in the circle.
Lyndsey Carvalho hit a two-run double and finished with two hits along with Jolene Hirata and Alize Ka’apana.
Bryana Grace had two of Keaau’s three hits against Sweat, who struck out five and walked three in the four-inning TKO.
Grace also took the loss, walking six with four strikeouts in 3 1/3.
Kamehameha 17, Ka’u 1: Taylor-James Sullivan earned the win Tuesday in Pahala and homered, and Kawai Kauahi-Raquel finished with three hits, three RBIs, three runs scored and two doubles.
Along with a three-run home run, Sullivan hit an RBI single. Kawehi Ili, Dioni Lincoln and Jessica Camerosalso had hits apiece.
Sullivan walked eight in the four-inning TKO and struck out four.
CeAndrea Silva-Kamei struck out two and walked six in four innings for the Trojans.
Baseball
Tai Atkins struck out seven in Kamehameha’s third combined, TKO-shortened no-hitter of the season as the Warriors swept a doubleheader against Kohala, winning 15-0 and 10-0 at home.
Atkins, a left-handed UH-Manoa commit, has been used sparingly this season by the Warriors (8-0), but the junior started the first game against the Cowboys (0-8) and only allowed a hit batter through 3 2/3 innings while posting one of Kamehameha’s four triples at the plate.
Bula Ahuna doubled and tripled as the Warriors picked up 15 hits, going 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Dustin Asuncion was 2 for 2 with a double, Kekona Naipo-Arsiga was 2 for 3 and Kaynen Tolentino and Brycen Nakata each hit a two-run triples.
Brock Malani got the final out for Kamehameha.
Jefferey Francisco pitched 2 1/3 innings for Kohala.
In the second game, Justyce Ishii (two innings),Dustin Asuncion (one), Kyran Kai (one) and Luke Kaniho (one) combined to hold the Cowboys to two hits.
At the plate, Kaniho was 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs.
Tehvyn Isabel doubled for Kohala and took the loss, pitching three innings.
Honokaa 12, Kohala 7: Kalae Pauli finished with three hits Tuesday, including a double, and drove in five runs to pace the Dragons to a road victory.
Kaia Nakamoto was the winning pitcher, and Dreg’n Roque Lewis collected two hits for the Cowboys.
