Big Island police arrest 21 motorists for DUI

During the week of March 19-25, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident and one was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, eight.

• South Kohala, five.

• Puna and South Hilo, four each.

So far this year, there have been 254 DUI arrests compared with 295 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13.9 percent.

There have been 297 major accidents so far this year compared with 315 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.7 percent.

To date, there have been seven official traffic fatalities this year compared with six during the same time period last year, an increase of 16.7 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
