Instead of fooling around with Holy Names and risking an embarrassing loss, UH-Hilo twice put the lowly Hawks away Wednesday for a sweep in Pacific West Conference softball in Oakland, Calif.
Bailey Gaspar homered and doubled and drove in three in the first game, an 8-3 win in which Cyanne Fernandez got on back on track. In a 10-0 victory, freshman Megan Berrelleza pitched a two-hit shutout in just her first college start.
Berrelleza walked three in the five-inning TKO.
Isabelle Meija and Mari Kawano each had two hits. Meija plated two with a single in the third as the Vulcans (22-10, 10-4) scored six runs. Kawano hit a RBI double in the first inning.
Gaspar’s homer in the opener was her team-leading 10th of the season. Waiakea graduate Skylar Thomas was 2 for 3 and drew a bases-loaded walk.
Fernandez (14-3) went the distance, striking out six and walking one. She yielded nine hits and two earned runs as the Hawks (1-23, 1-11) got a sniff an upset.
Tuesday was a different story as UHH won a slugfest 11-8 and a pitcher’s duel 3-1 against Holy Names.
Vuls men’s tennis survives
The Vulcans rallied to win the last four singles matches to upend UC San Diego 5-4 in La Jolla, Calif.
Vaclav Slezak avenged a loss to Eric Tseng earlier in the season, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 for the clincher.
Alessandro Giuliato won to improve to 13-1, and he and Slezak also won at No. 1 doubles.
The Vuls (13-1) have won 10 in a row.
However, they fell from No. 5 to No. 11 in the computerized Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
