Kealakehe pitcher Telsea Taketa and her counterpart Destynee Carvalho both went the distance at Honokaa and were candidates for a win.
But Taketa’s defense was better, and the Waveriders defeated the Dragons 6-4 in a BIIF game on Wednesday.
Defense made all the difference.
Taketa scattered eight hits, allowed four runs, walked three and struck out one. Her defense committed four errors, which led to just one unearned run.
Carvalho gave up 10 hits and one walk and six runs. Her defense made seven errors, which led to four unearned runs.
Lisan Mudong batted 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Nanea Kaluau was 3 for 3, and Lucky Isisaki went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Division I Waveriders (6-3).
Taylor Tabucbuc batted 2 for 2 with two RBIs, including a homer, and Ceelyn Gail-Lucero went 2 for 4 for the Division II Dragons (8-5).
Konawaena 15, Hawaii Prep 7: Jayla Medeiros batted 2 for 4 with three RBIs, and Anuntak Magedlynn went 2 for 4, including two triples, with two RBIs, and Nalani Wall and Erin Kaimuloa-Bates each drove in two runs.
Andi Uemura went four innings and struck out one in the win. She allowed four runs on five hits and one walk. Shaylann pitched three innings of three-run relief for the Wildcats (7-2).
Hillary Conners went the distance in the loss for Ka Makani (3-9).
Conners, Sarah Taniguchi, Ashley Souza, and Jordan Zarate had two hits each while Tiare Apina had two RBIs for HPA.
Keaau 23, Pahoa 9: Mahea Respisco had two hits, including a grand slam, Bryana Grace had three hits, and Gillian Cabbab had two hits for the Cougars (4-4). Anela Gonzales went the distance in the five-inning TKO win and whiffed seven.
Kriya Benn took the loss. Staysia Hoomana clubbed a two-run homer for the Daggers (0-11).
