Hawaii County Civil Defense warns residents to be alert for flooding as heavy rains, high surf and thunderstorms are expected throughout the weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory Friday afternoon that affects nearly the entire the island, with the only unaffected area being a sliver of the southernmost part of Ka‘u.

At the same time, according to Civil Defense, high surf is to be expected in the Hilo, Kohala, Hamakua and Puna districts today and tomorrow, while the NWS forecasts a 100 percent chance of heavy rain today and tomorrow.

Because of the weather, as well as strong trade winds reaching the island, residents are advised to be cautious when approaching flood-prone areas. Road closures can occur at any time.

Residents also are advised to secure any loose items outdoors that might be affected by strong winds.

Meanwhile, Waipio Valley Road, which was closed earlier this week after heavy rains triggered a landslide, reopened to all traffic Friday afternoon.
