During the week of April 23-29, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and two of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; Puna, six; South Hilo, five; and South Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 374 DUI arrests compared to 398 during the same period last year, a decrease of six percent.
There have been 418 major accidents so far this year compared to 459 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.9 percent.
To date, there have been eight official traffic fatalities, compared to seven fatalities at the same time last year. This represents an increase of 14.3 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
