A new volcanic fissure has erupted near the entrance to Lanipuna Gardens, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.
As of 2 p.m., Civil Defense said it was actively erupting, and officials were on seen assessing the situation. Hazardous fumes continue to be released.
So far, the six-day-old eruption has covered 116.57 acres of land, mostly in Leilani Estates. Thirty-six structures have been destroyed, while a total of 15 fissures have emerged.
Highway 130 remains closed between Malama Street and Kamaili Road. Pohoiki Road is closed from Highway 132 to Hinalo Street. No access is allowed at this time for residents in Lanipuna Gardens.
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has confirmed a large ash plume from Halemaumua is being carried towards Pahala. Light dusting could occur in populated areas.
A community meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Volcano Community Center regarding changes to the summit eruption.
